Urban Agriculture Takes Root at Garza’s Gardens

High school lessons on government and the economy can all too often be boring and tedious, but for the past twelve years, Martha Cason has led the Garza’s Gardens program at Garza Independence High School in a way that erases the tedium. Instead, concepts of government, economy, horticulture, and sustainability escape the realm of theory and become real-life practice.

Urban Bee Removal: Rescuing Bees One Colony at a Time

Bee rescue is one of those jobs that most people don’t know exist until they find themselves with an infestation on their property. At that point they usually want an expert available right away. In Austin, Brandon Fehrenkamp of Eastside Honey Co. is the go-to guy for bee removal and relocation.  He has relocated bees from hives that were established within the walls of homes, from beneath floorboards, from water boxes and 55-gallon drums, and from swarms in transition from one hive location to another.

Seaweed Scientist

Lew Weil, a molecular biologist, grows seaweed for his company, Austin Sea Veggies. In his garage, Lew grows ogo, edible seaweed that looks a little like material for a gelatinous bird’s nest.  Where else but Austin, Texas, hundreds of miles away from any coastline, would you find a scientist hunched over an aquarium full of seaweed. Yes, Austin is weird.

Many Hands Make Light Work at Many Hands Farm Corps

Ryan Karb, co-founder of Many Hands Farm Corps.

It’s no secret that the number of young farmers is increasing.  Be it the influence of authors such as Michael PollanBarbara Kingsolver, and Jonathan Safran Foer, the desire to escape the mundaneness of the daily grind depicted by re-runs of “The Office,” or simply a longing to connect back to the earth– young people across the country are becoming more and more interested in agriculture. The New York Times even recently featured an article that showcased this new phenomenon of twenty-somethings getting their hands dirty in the field. Continue reading

The Food Cyclist: Exploring Our Nation’s Farms on Two Wheels

“There’s a saying that if you want to go places, you fly in a plane; If you want to see things, you drive in a car; If you want to experience life, you ride a bike; If you want to be intimate with your surroundings, you run or walk. Well, I always say that I’m too lazy to run or walk, so I bike.”

Fun and Games at This Lil’ Piggy Farm

Rhonda Williams is probably one of the most enthusiastic and engaging farmers I’ve met in my food travels around Central Florida. I’ve visited a lot of amazing farms, seen beautiful places, and met some great characters on two legs and four. However, from my first email correspondence, with Rhonda’s use of animated pig emoticons (), I knew I was in for an extra special treat at This Lil’ Piggy Farm.
