Touring Musicians, Coco & Lafe, Contribute Over 2000 Pics, Documenting 60 Farmers Markets For Real Time Farms

Can we all give a round of applause to Coco & Lafe?!?!

They’ve sent in over 2000 pictures; documenting hundreds of farms and over 60 markets nationwide for Real Time Farms. Coco & Lafe traveled across the country during the spring, summer, and fall of 2011 for their “Get Fresh” Tour of farmers markets, coinciding with the release of their fifth album, Big Bang! (listen in here).

The idea to tour farmers markets came after a chance encounter in Harvard Square with a local market manager, who upon listening to Coco & Lafe perform, asked them to play at the market. Passionate about local, healthy food, and wooed by the good vibes at markets, Coco & Lafe packed up their car complete with their dog Lilla, and set out for the road.

When we heard about their trip, we were eager to partner! Thank you Coco & Lafe! Eaters everywhere tip their forks to you!

Carrots Come From the Ground, and Chicken Comes From…

On a visit to the Biltmore Estate last spring, I stopped by the on-site barn to check out some of the farm animals living there. Wandering around the visitors section, I watched as children visiting the historic site with their families gazed, wide-eyed, at the livestock. One boy tugged his father’s sleeve and asked something to the effect of “why is that called the same thing as what we eat for dinner?” He was referring, of course, to one of the chickens strutting about the barnyard. After his father explained that this was no mere accident of nomenclature, an expression that reflected a mixture of horror and fascination came over the boy’s face. Huh. I went to the barn to see the animals (they had a variety: chickens, goats, rabbits–most of the usual suspects) but what I came away with was a sense of disquiet.
