Battery Park Urban Farm

Battery Park is on the very southern most tip of Manhattan, on the edge of the financial district. The area is filled with gleaming modern high-rises and mammoth art deco buildings remaining from the New York of old. I will hardly be the first person to say that New York is a city of contradictions. But, as I sat on the grass in the sun watching volunteer farmers learn how to tell if a yellow tomato is ripe, I felt the rumble of a subway passing beneath the ground and I felt that it was impossible not to be awe-struck by the clash between the new and the old, and the city and the farm.

Tour ReVision Urban Farm (in pictures!)

ReVision Urban Farm in Dorchester, MA

ReVision Urban Farm began as a small garden in 1990 alongside a shelter for homeless mothers that is now the ReVision Family Home. Originally called ReVision House, the program began as a very small grassroots effort to positively impact the lives of young homeless mothers and their children.  With the purchase of three abandoned lots across the street, a plot of land was reclaimed in the heart of Boston to become the ReVision Urban farm that is in operation today.  When I visited the farm with fellow Food Warrior Rebecca Bilodeau, we were able to see one of the new plots of land where volunteers and farm staff were constructing raised beds and hard at work.

Revision’s greenhouse and one of its plots of land are nearby Blue Hill Avenue, one of the main streets that runs through the neighborhood of Dorchester.

Hell’s Kitchen Farm Project

Amazing, innovative farming projects are all around New York City, but some of them are hard to see unless you know where to look. The Hell’s Kitchen Farm Project is a perfect example of this: located on the rooftop of the Metro Baptist Church on 44th street, in the once rough neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, you are almost certain to miss out on this little urban wonder if you stick to street level. Millions of people pass by this church every week without knowing that an urban farm flourishes on the rooftop.

Tour Clear Flour Bread (in pictures!)

Clear Flour Bread in Brookline, MA

Clear Flour Bread specializes in making the authentic breads of Italy and France. “Clear flour essentially is the beginning stage of the milling process, so basically you are taking the wheat from the truck that it is coming in and you are stripping it – it is called the clearing of the flour, so hence the name,” shares manger Carrie Diana.

Using pure ingredients – flour, water, salt and yeast – they scratch, mix, and hand shaped long fermented doughs for stone hearth baking. All of their flours are unbleached and unbromated. The rye, whole wheat, buckwheat, and 7-grain blend are all organic and stone ground.

SPAGnVOLA Chocolate: From Bean to Bar

Few chocolatiers can claim they grown their own cacao.  But SPAGnVOLA Chocolate can. No big money or world distribution, just a farm in the Dominican Republic, which directly sources to their Gaithersburg, “Truffle Factory” via the Baltimore Harbor. For the owners, Eric and Crisoire Reid, the journey began with AgroCriso organic farm, just a few miles outside of Crisoire’s hometown, which produces cacao, as well as tangerines, avocado, mangos and papayas.

Sunshine in a Jar: Rose Geranium Apricot Jam

While we in the Midwest are sweating away the hours this summer, it may not come to mind that in only a few short months the days will be shorter and cooler, until another winter will be upon us.  The age-old tradition of “putting up” jars of summer fruit not only allows you to purchase fresh fruits at their peak, but also makes them keep to be enjoyed on a colder, less sunshine-filled day.  Fresh apricots right off the tree are something which has little to nothing in common with the canned version found on the grocery store shelf.  Picking sun-ripened apricots from a local grower and preserving them yourself can capture that sunshine of the summer day you picked them.
